Learn about the Lafayette County Literacy
Council
History
In 1996 the Lafayette County Literacy Council was granted 501(c) 3 status and began as a small community outreach organization, providing services in adult basic education. The services offered included one-on-one tutoring for adult learners, small group classes, and GED training. In 1998 the Council added children’s literacy as an area of focus. Community after-school programs were offered to help children from lower income families with homework help and Internet access. Children were also given the opportunity to receive one-on-one tutoring to improve their reading levels. In 2002 the Council changed its mission statement to combine the needs of children and adults and address illiteracy from a family perspective. The Council currently employs a director, two project coordinators, has an active board of directors, and serves more than 1000 families per year.
