Our Programs
LCLC is a part of the Oxford Conference for the Book held every Spring. In collaboration with The Center for the Study of Southern Culture, Square Books Jr., and Oxford Junior Auxiliary, we help bring a children’s author to the Conference and buy each Oxford and Lafayette County fifth-grader a copy of one of the author’s books and a T-shirt commemorating the event. The children are encouraged to see themselves as authors and contributors to the literary arts. All fifth-graders and ninth-graders attend the event held at the Ford Center.
Serves: approximately 450 fifth-graders per year & approximately 450 ninth-graders per yearThe LCLC runs a Public Service Campaign, every August to educate the public on the issue of illiteracy. In 2005 first-graders from Lafayette and Bramlett elementary schools recorded public service announcements that are being played on local radio stations. We distribute brochures and posters. Our director addresses local business and community development groups. A more literate citizenry benefits everyone!
Tutoring Services provide one-on-one reading instruction to all interested learners in Adult Basic Education and conversational English. Our volunteer tutors receive training, curriculum, and support from LCLC. Based on schedules and personal preference the Literacy Council matches trained volunteer tutors with learners. Tutors and learners determine their own meeting time and place and then work on areas such as vocabulary, reading comprehension, and GED preparation. Non-native English speakers practice conversational English. Instruction is very individualized.
Currently serves: 50 individuals per month
